C.H. Collins Athletic Complex …
… a facility that reflects the successes of past, present and future students
As a successful coach and high school administrator, C.H. Collins, Sr. has been described as a legend in Denton’s history because of the impact he made on so many lives. Coach Collins loved sports and playing sports was the gateway for him to further his education and expand his horizons. In high school, he won a scholarship to Jarvis Christian College in Hawkins, Texas. He was also a singer and sang in the college choir. It was singing that brought C.H. and his wife, Esta, together. The two were married for 54 years; they had four children. Coach Collins came to Denton ISD in 1954 as the football, basketball and track coach for the Fred Moore High School Dragons. He was a winning coach – consistently taking his teams to the district and regional competitions, plus three state finals. The NFL named two of his players – Carl Garrett and Don Woods - “Rookie of the Year”. One of his most successful tributes occurred in 1967 when Coach Collins helped integrate Fred Moore High School with Denton High and then continued his coaching at Denton High. After the successful integration, he became Dean of Men at Denton High until he retired in 1986. After Mr. Collins died in 1996, the Board of Trustees of Denton ISD named the new athletic facility after him to honor this outstanding coach.
For decades to come, the C. H. Collins Athletic Complex will house thousands of games and represent the pride of the community as a facility that reflects the successes of past, present and future students.
STADIUM FACTS...

Gerald J. Ford Stadium is a stadium in University Park, Texas, one of the two "Park Cities" that form an enclave of Dallas. The stadium is used primarily for football, and it is home to the Southern Methodist University (SMU) Mustangs and is frequently used for local high school football games. It was the last on-campus stadium in NCAA Division I-A (now Division I FBS) to open in the 20th century.
The building stands on the site of the former Ownby Stadium, the school's previous on-campus football stadium. Ownby was demolished starting in late October 1998 in order to clear the land designated for the new stadium. Ford Stadium opened on September 2, 2000 with a football game against the University of Kansas. The north-south oriented stadium is bowl-shaped, with stands on three sides (west, east, and north). SMU can one day develop south side seating, extending the stadium's seating capacity to 45,000.
The stadium is named after Gerald J. Ford (who should not be confused with former US President Gerald R. Ford), a billionaire banker who provided most of the funding for its construction.
Outside the northeast corner of the stadium is Doak Walker Plaza, honoring the former Heisman Trophy winner and SMU's greatest football star. The plaza includes a life-sized replica of the Doak Walker Award trophy, awarded annually to the nation's top college football running back. The northwest corner is connected to the Loyd All-Sports Center, which contains locker, training, and office space for SMU athletics, as well as the Spirit Shop, the office of the Alumni Association, and the Athlete Education Center.
On September 4, 2004, the attendance record was set at Gerald J. Ford Stadium when 34,495 people watched the Texas Tech Red Raiders face off against the SMU Mustangs. Texas Tech won the game 27–13.
On September 15, 2007, the Gerald J. Ford stadium hosted one of the rare ‘#1 vs. #2’ matchups in high school football, as Miami Northwestern beat Southlake Carroll 29–21 in front 31,896 fans and an ESPNU audience.

SMU Mustangs (NCAA) (2000-present)

Dallas Conrad History
Emmett J. Conrad High School was built in 2006. The school is named after Dr. Emmett J. Conrad, the first black man elected to the DISD board of trustees. He served on the board from 1967 to 1977, and was later elected to the Texas Board of Education in 1984, where he served until his 1993 death. He was also a surgeon at St. Paul Medical Center. The first class to graduated from Emmett J. Conrad High School was the Class of 2009 and their graduation was on May 30,2009 at Loos Fieldhouse.
The school was built as part a $1.37 billion bond program approved by voters in January 2002.
The school was only for grades 9-10 in its first year. Towards the end of the 2008-2009 school year Conrad was announced as academically acceptable for the 2009-2010 school year.
School uniforms
Conrad High School requires its students to wear school uniforms. The Texas Education Agency specifies that the parents and/or guardians of students zoned to a school with uniforms may apply for a waiver to opt out of the uniform policy so their children do not have to wear the uniform; parents must specify 'bona fide' reasons, such as religious reasons or philosophical objections.

2009 Battle of the Ax
History: The Sherman-Denison Football rivalry began in 1901…(as far as has been discovered) a rivalry that has become a tradition for both communities and both schools. This is the longest continuous rivalry among all high schools in the state of Texas. Sherman won the first game. There were three games not played during World War I, one game not played during the 20’s and one game not played in the 30’s. Originally, and for many years to follow, the game was played on the afternoon of Thanksgiving Day. It did not take long for the rivalry to take a negative turn, involving much vandalism and property destruction. Everyone was concerned, but only one individual took positive action-Jack Barker, a Denison businessman. Mr. Barker, owner of a small ice cream parlor and store on Main Street across from the old Denison High School, wanted to create a symbol that represented good sportsmanship and excellence in the athletic competitions between the two schools. The game has come to be called the Battle of the Ax, its symbol the ax. The ax is awarded yearly to the school that wins the football game between Sherman and Denison. The scores and years are engraved on the blade. When both sides of the blade are filled, the school with the most victories will keep the original ax. The first game for the AX was played in 1949. Mr. Barker wanted a symbol that represented a spirit of never quitting. Although only one team wins the AX, both teams win the spirit of the AX.

2009 Notes: Since the UIL formed in 1920 (modern era) Sherman leads the series 50-31-6
Overall, the 111th meeting in the longest running continuous series in the state of Texas. Sherman leads the all-time series 65-37-8. This will be the eighth time the Grayson County rivals have met in the final week of the regular season with the district championship on the line. Denison holds a 4-1-2 edge in those meetings. The Jackets captured the district title with wins in the 2008, 1997, 1996 and 1946 contests. The two teams tied in 1943 and 1961 while Sherman’s lone victory in those district championship games was in 1950.
Denison has won four of the last five meetings, with the only loss in that span coming in a 48-44 thriller at Munson Stadium in 2006 when the Jackets were throwing into the end zone for the win on the final two plays of the game. Two years ago, Jordan Taylor came on in relief at quarterback in the second half to lead the Jackets back from a 19-point deficit with 10 minutes remaining. Taylor accounted for over 200 yards of offense on Denison’s final three drives and scored all three Jacket touchdowns in the final period. Last year with Taylor returning from a broken collarbone, D.J. Jones rushed for a Battle of the Ax record 295 yards and two touchdowns while also adding a 79-yard kickoff return for a score.

2009---
2009 Notes: Since the UIL formed in 1920 (modern era) Sherman leads the series 50-31-6

Howe is 3-1 for the first time since 1998 (that team went 10-2 and won the District Championship and Bi-District Championship).
The 3 wins matches the highest total for any Howe team since 2003 (6-6). 6 wins are the most in this decade (2000, 2003).
Howe has outscored their opponents 86-70 so far in 2009. The last Howe team to outscore their opponents for an entire season was the 2000 Dogs that found themselves in the playoffs.

Mid-summer Ranger Grades and Prediction about 2nd 1/2
Lineup:
1. Ian Kinsler, C- ; needs to stop trying to hit HR's evertime up. Take a pitch now and then and hit a ground ball for a change. Has made great strides in the field though and that keeps him from failing.
2. Michael Young, A- ; Steady as a rock. Will always hit near .310 and give you 200 hits when healthy. Transition to 3b has been great. Lack of average with runners on keeps him from A+
3. Josh Hamilton, D ; has been complete failure so far this season. I know, he's been injured for 1/2 of the first half, but even when healthy has not produce. He is the catalyst for this team and he has been far below expected.
4. Nelson Cruz, A- ; very streaky hitter who can flat out tag the ball. But goes in to mini-slumps against teams that scout him well. Expect a MAJOR drop-off in the 2nd half when most teams finally scout him correctly. Great arm in the field, but not a superb outfielder.
5. Hank Blalock, B- ; lots of power, and heck...he's healthy! His on-base percentage is awful (like most of this team). His defense at first base so far is average.
6. Marlon Byrd, A- ; Marlon is maxing out what Marlon can do. He's not a superstar but he's been consistent. An above average flyball chaser with an underaverage arm. But he's been consistent.
7. Chris Davis, F ; complete failure at the major league level. His superb defensive skills keep him from getting G.
8. Jarrod Saltalamaccia, B ; for a very young kid, he's done a remarkable job behind the plate. His bat will continue to develop, but for now for what he is...it's not that bad.
9. Elvis Andrus, A ; okay, so he's great defensively, he's held his own with the bat. For what we thought we'd get from him...I'd say an A is very worthy.
Starting Five:
1. Kevin Millwood, A ; Started very strong and has continued to be very strong in the early stages of the heat. He's been the ace Texas has always wanted him to be.
2. Vicente Padilla, C+ ; he's a nutcase. One great start, one weird one, followed by a mediocre one, followed by a masterpiece. Who is this guy? He has all the stuff to be very very good, but not sure he cares.
3. Brandon McCarthy, D ; he has stuff, but is as fragile as Aunt Wilma. He continues to make the Danks trade look like a complete failure.
4. Matt Harrison, C- ; can't be consistent. Walks way too many for a guy who can't strikeout fragile Aunt Wilma. Can throw groundballs but his injury has kept his progress from showing.
5. Scott Feldman A+ ; Came in as the 6th starter, but has been nearly as good as Millwood if not better. His sinking cutter makes him a groundout machine. If he can maintain his effectiveness, the Rangers have a GREAT back end of the rotation guy.
Bullpen:
Frank Francisco, A- ; has been largely dominant when healthy. But that keeps him from getting an A+.
C.J. Wilson, C- ; I want to fail him so bad because he makes me want to pull my hair out. His Mitch Williams-esque flair for the dramatic and quirky attitude makes me wish we could trade him to the Cubs for Rafael Palmeiro just as Grieve did with Mitch Williams. Oh well, we're stuck with him and this bullpen will live and die with this guy.
Eddie Guardado, F ; At his age, he's the best left-handed bullpen advisor in the league, but unfortunately he's still being paid to get outs and he's awful at that.
Darren O'Day, A+ ; where's the evidence to give him anything but a perfect grade?
Derrick Holland, B- ; His stats are no where near proof of the talent he possesses. I would trust him in a heart beat before C.J. in the same situations. But he's still inexperienced and needs more time to get beat around a little bit. He'll be fine.
Jason Jennings, B+ ; has been surprisingly steady and effective now that he's healthy. The fact that his placement on the 40 man last year cost us Armando Gallaraga will forever keep him for getting an A.
The Rangers should come back to what we expect them to be in the 2nd 1/2. The pitching will falter and the hitting will get better. Kinsler and Hamilton have to lead this team to get them on track. Both are horribly impatient and need to take more pitches. This team has to walk more and hit better with runners in scoring position and stop relying on the mulit-HR game to get them by. But it's all about pitching and the Rangers are not there....yet. They have talented arms...but not ready for the ups and downs of the pennant race. They also have no money to go and get help. This is what it is...and I'm afraid it's just not enough. Rangers finish 7.5 games out of first behind the Angels and barely ahead of the Mariniers. I hope I'm wrong.
