Dallas Conrad History
Emmett J. Conrad High School was built in 2006. The school is named after Dr. Emmett J. Conrad, the first black man elected to the DISD board of trustees. He served on the board from 1967 to 1977, and was later elected to the Texas Board of Education in 1984, where he served until his 1993 death. He was also a surgeon at St. Paul Medical Center. The first class to graduated from Emmett J. Conrad High School was the Class of 2009 and their graduation was on May 30,2009 at Loos Fieldhouse.
The school was built as part a $1.37 billion bond program approved by voters in January 2002.
The school was only for grades 9-10 in its first year. Towards the end of the 2008-2009 school year Conrad was announced as academically acceptable for the 2009-2010 school year.
School uniforms
Conrad High School requires its students to wear school uniforms. The Texas Education Agency specifies that the parents and/or guardians of students zoned to a school with uniforms may apply for a waiver to opt out of the uniform policy so their children do not have to wear the uniform; parents must specify 'bona fide' reasons, such as religious reasons or philosophical objections.
